Intel introduces the 8008 microprocessor

13th March 1972 The Intel 8008 was the first 8-bit programmable microprocessor. The chip was originally commissioned by Computer Terminal Corporation (CTC) and known as the 1201. However, design delays and performance issues meant that CTC cancelled their order. Despite the loss of their original customer, Intel decided to sell the 8008 commercially. Intel formally announced the 8008 with an article, “8-bit parallel processor offered on a single chip”, which appeared in the 13th March 1972 issue of Electronics magazine.
